Effective risk assessment is the cornerstone of workplace accident prevention. Industrial environments introduce complex machinery, high-voltage systems, and hazardous substances requiring methodical analysis.

The 5 Standard Steps to Risk Assessment

  1. Identify the Hazards: Inspect working areas, analyze task workflows, and consult chemical SDS data sheets.
  2. Determine Who Might Be Harmed & How: Map vulnerable groups including operators, maintenance crews, sub-contractors, and visitors.
  3. Evaluate Risks & Decide on Controls: Calculate risk scores (Likelihood x Severity) and implement the Hierarchy of Controls.
  4. Record Findings & Implement Actions: Document findings in official JSA (Job Safety Analysis) records.
  5. Review & Update Periodically: Re-assess whenever new machinery is introduced or site procedures change.

The Hierarchy of Controls

Safety professionals must always apply controls in order of priority:

  • Elimination: Remove the hazard completely from the process.
  • Substitution: Replace dangerous chemicals or machinery with safer alternatives.
  • Engineering Controls: Isolate people from the hazard (e.g., machine guards, ventilation systems).
  • Administrative Controls: Change the way people work (e.g., permits to work, rotation schedules).
  • PPE: Protect the worker with Personal Protective Equipment as a last line of defense.
